SCHOFF, Otto (1884-1938). Knabenliebe. 10 Radierungen . [Berlin: Fritz Gurlitt, ca. 1925.
SCHOFF, Otto (1884-1938). Knabenliebe. 10 Radierungen . [Berlin: Fritz Gurlitt, ca. 1925.] Folio (340 x 285 mm). 10 etchings (170 x 130 mm to the plate mark, on 265 x 190 mm sheets), each signed 'Otto Schoff' in pencil in the bottom right, in pale blue paper window mounts (a few minor spots). Near-contemporary black half cloth portfolio over pink card, upper side lettered in manuscript. Provenance : Karl Ludwig Leonhardt (sold, Zisska & Schauer, 10 May 2012, lot 1793). FIRST EDITION. A COMPLETE SET OF THIS RARE HOMOEROTIC SUITE , which exudes a carefree, idealized spirit. Schoff visited Paris with George Grosz in 1913-14 and attended classes at the Colarossi with a grant from the city of Bremen. Hermann Göring is known to have collected his work, but Schoff was subjected to increasing pressure from 1935 and was eventually prohibited from drawing; he died from a heart attack in 1938 when his rooms were being searched by the Gestapo. MoMA's Expressionism collection includes a number of etchings and drawings by Schoff. RARE : AE and ABPC record no other copy having sold at auction. Bilder-Lexicon IV, 798.
