"Repairing Taro's mother's house," watercolor, 216 x 273 mm, signed and dated. Matted and framed. Published: The Boy of the Three-Year Nap by Dianne Snyder (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1988). WITH: Photograph of the artist as a boy and a letter from Say to James Marshall n.d. Torn. Caldecott Medal winner Allen Say is among the most celebrated of contemporary American picture book artists. Born of a Japanese-American mother and a Korean father in Yokahama, Japan, he was adopted by a British family and raised in Shanghai after his parents divorced. When he turned 16, he joined his father in California and attended a military school. His remarkable life has been the subject of several of his children's books. The Boy of the Three-Year Nap was named a Caldecott Honor Book and won The Boston-Globe-Horn Book Award in 1989. In Say's letter to Marshall he writes: "This was shot in 1950. Chap on left is yours truly, four months short of his 13th birthday and dressed funny by his mother. The master was mere 35, smoking a Peace cigarette as usual–now he smokes Dunhills. My latest book, Tree of Cranes, is dedicated to him. A."
