Beschreibung:

SANNAZARO, Giacomo (1458-1530). Arcadia ... tutta fornita ettratta emendatissima dal suo originale . Edited by Petrus Summontius. Naples: Sigismund Mayr, March 1504. Small 4° (187 x 120mm). Dedication by Summonte to Cardinal d'Aragon. Initial spaces with guide-letters, first initial supplied in red (washed), contemporary MS corrections made, possibly in the printing house, according to printed corrigenda on final recto. (Small wormholes touching some letters in title repaired, tiny marginal wormholes in last two leaves, very occasional light spotting or browning.) Modern vellum, red leather spine label. FIRST COMPLETE, AUTHORIZED EDITION. A pirated edition had appeared at Venice, printed by Bernardino da Vercelli in 1502, much against the wishes of the author. Complaining in a letter to Marc'Antonio Michele, Sannazaro wrote that the printer should be sent to a pig farm. The Venetian edition was incomplete and riddled with errors, but it was nonetheless reprinted two more times, in 1502 and 1504, by Vercelli, and a further edition was printed at Milan by Scinzenzeler on 9 January 1504. As the dedicatory letter to Cardinal d'Aragon by the editor makes clear, the present edition is printed from a corrected original manuscript, which was in the possession of Sannazaro's brother, Marco Antonio Sannazaro. Of the previous Venetian edition, Summonte condemns it as "tutte deformate" with "errori intolerabili". A 10-year privilege granted to protect the work from being printed by others is cited on the last page. Brunet V: 128; Gamba 888 ("rara").
