SANDRART, Joachim von (1606-1688) - Teutsche Academie der Bau-Bildhauer- und Maler-Kunst. Nuremberg: Johann Andrea Endterischen Handlung, 1768-78. A magnificent copy with very good impressions of the plates and printed on strong paper. Numerous artists collaborated to the work including the engravers C. G. Amling, R. Collin, C. Engelbrecht, G C. Eimert, S. Rosa S. Felice, L. Sandrart, R. Collin, J.B. Homann, J. Meyer, P. Kilian, L. Heckenauer, M. Kiisell, J. Franck, G. A. Wolfgang, C. Ferri, P. Ferren and J.J. Thurneyser. The plates are after Sandrart, Palladio and many others and illustrate architectural plans, elevations, views, garden subjects, sculptures, paintings etc. 3 tomes in 8 volumes, folio (405 x 264mm). Half-titles in each volume, 5 engraved titles not included in the plate count and bound sometimes at the beginning and others in the middle, 848 plates on 791 sheets of which over 300 double-page and 3 folding (sometimes two plates are bound on the same sheet), fine engraved head-and-tail pieces; for a detailed count of the plates present in each volume please contact the department (the large folding plate in the first volume "Iconographia seu Vestigium Areae Vaticanae" laid on cloth and with some repaired tears, very few sporadic wormholes, light occasional browning). Contemporary half calf over marbled paper plates, spines decorated in gilt with double labels for the title and volume number, red edges (some rubbing to extremities and joints, some scuffing).
