Salomon Leonardus Verveer (The Hague 1813 - 1876) Washerwomen by a brook near a castle (ca. 1836-1838) Signed m.l. Oil on panel, 25.2 x 31 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands N.B.: Verveer was a succesfull painter from The Hague and was one of the prominent artists of Dutch Romanticism. He was regularly awarded prizes and tributes and took part in numerous international art exhibitions. Initially Verveer mainly painted harbour views and river landscapes, but later on also started painting cityscapes and village views and fishing scenes in fishing villages such as Scheveningen and Katwijk aan Zee. In the period this work was painted the artist shared a studio with Wijnand Nuijen (1813-1839) and Antonie Waldorp (1803-1866) on the Binnenhof in The Hague in the Loterijzaal, nowadays the Ridderzaal. A comparable work, dated 1841, is in the collection of the Rijkmuseum Twenthe in Enschede.
