SAINT JAMES, THE LESS. Historiated initial 'D', on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ANTIPHONAL ON VELLUM. [Bologna or North-Eastern Italy, second quarter of the 14th century.] Initial 82 x 80mm with extensions, leaf 560 x 380mm. The Saint in an orange cloak and pink gown, at his waist a club, the symbol of his martyrdom. He is standing, being blessed by the hand of God. Initial in orange and blue with pink and light blue leafy design, on brown ground, with long coloured foliate extensions. The leaf recto and verso has 10 lines of music on a 4-line black and red stave, with text in a rounded gothic hand, in black ink, rubrics in red, large red and blue initials, with penwork decoration (4 on recto and 9 on verso). The verso has the contemporary foliation 'xxxxviii'. The initial introduces the introit for the Mass following Lauds in Advent Dominus dixit ad me filius. Framed and glazed. The artist of the initial was either working in Bologna or very much influenced by Bolognese art.
