Sabrina Knowles (born 1955) and Jenny Pohlman (born 1960)Ndoto Mweya (Dream Spirit) circa 2003 blown, sculpted, sandblasted glass, ferrous metals, artificial sinew, beads height 19in (48.3cm); width 7in (17.8cm); depth 6in (15cm) FootnotesThe title of the offered work, Ndoto Mweya, means "Dream Spirit" in the Shona tribal language of Zimbabwe. According to the artists, "The bird sculpture is a protective warrior. She is an icon of self-empowerment and liberation." Provenance Thomas R. Riley Galleries, Ohio and Washington Collection of Sam and Nancy Kunin, acquired from the above Sam and Nancy's Kunin's love of art was born in Chicago. Sam worked as an usher at the opera and Nancy a hat checker. They met in summer camp both as counselors. Their honeymoon took them west. They fell in love with the warm weather and the promise of raising a family. They began their collection with biscuit barrels traveling overseas and finding gems to fill their contemporary ranch house in Tarzana, California. Nothing gave them greater pleasure then visiting obscure galleries and meeting artists who were passionate about their work. They brought these treasures back home and shared their stories. Art glass for Sam and Nancy blended symphony with light, color and form. The present lot through lot 304 are from the Collection of Sam and Nancy Kunin.
