Beschreibung:

Sabalites sp. Eocene Green River Formation, Wyoming Fossilized palm fronds are considered rare finds due to the fragility of the cellulose, of which they were composed in life. They are often regarded as the most aesthetically appealing specimens from this prehistoric lake system, which, 51 million years ago, teemed with a wide variety of subtropical species. The Green River Formation is considered by paleontologists to be a "lagerstatte" – a natural accumulation of fossils representing an entire ecosystem - in which a subtropical Eocene environment supported flora and fauna thriving within a system of three prehistoric lakes 51 million years ago. Fortuitously preserved in the deep lakebottom silt, due to lack of oxygen and low temperature, dying animals and plants that were left undisturbed by predators or water current were perfectly preserved. Pressure and heat over millions of years produced the limestone which, when removed by expert laboratory technicians, reveals breathtaking fossil treasures unseen in 51 million years. In the present specimen, the fish are naturally occurring with the beautifully preserved palm frond. Hand-excavated and painstakingly laboratory-prepared. Framed in exotic Wenge wood and fitted with a cleat system for ease of mounting on any wall of conventional construction. Measuring 51 1/4 x 44 1/4in
