ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY. The forty-seventh [to eightieth ] Annual Report of the Royal Humane Society for the Recovery of Persons apparently Drowned or Dead . London: for the Society, 1821-54. 13 volumes various, 8° (211 x 121mm). Occasional plates, most lithographed, hand-coloured botanical plate of 'Monkshood', numerous illustrations, a few on India paper. Near-uniform contemporary calf and half calf (a few spines chipped). Reports of the Royal Humane Society, founded in 1774, and so named from 1787. These record awards made, propose safer types of boat, describe the apparatus needed and best methods of resuscitation, and give the addresses of receiving houses for the apparently drowned or dead. 1821 includes a design for a lifeboat by Captain Marryat, and 1834 gives an account of the boat invented by Thomas Ritzler of Hamburg. 1835 contains 2 lithographic plates, one with a vignette of the new receiving house 'on the north bank of the Serpentine in Hyde Park', and the other providing a floor plan. 'Proper attendants, warm baths, beds, tables, apparatus and copper, are in constant readiness during the bathing and skating seasons...' (13)
