Rowling, J.K.First American editions of the first three Harry Potter books
Comprising: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. New York: Arthur A. Levine, 1998. 8vo. First state dust-jacket (quote from The Guardian on lower cover). — Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. New York: Arthur A. Levine, 1999. 8vo. Dust jacket. — Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. New York: Arthur A. Levine, 1999. 8vo. Dust jacket.
First editions, first printings — the start of Pottermania in the United States, all three signed by the author.
Following the immediate success of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the United Kingdom, Scholastic bought the US publishing rights to it in April 1997 for an exceedingly high sum for the time: $105,000. Scholastic's Arthur Levine thought that the word "Philosopher's" sounded too archaic, and proposed changing the title to "Harry Potter and the School of Magic." Rowling compromised by suggesting "Sorcerer's" in place of "Philosopher's," and the book was published with the alternative title in September 1998. Along with this, further changes include the word "mum" or "mam" becoming "mom," "chips" becoming "fries," and "crisps" becoming "chip." Rowling vetoed these changes in subsequent editions, preferring the original British English vernacular.
Far fewer copies of the first U.S. edition of the first Harry Potter book were issued than the later books. The present copy is a first printing, first issue with all the correct points, with the first issue jacket without the Year 1 stamp on the spine, with the lone review blurb on the back panel quoted from the Guardian (later changed to Publisher’s Weekly), the "51695" printed above the barcode to the right of the ISBN and is priced $16.95 on the front flap.
All three copies very fine.
