His products are both purposeful and responsible, never made with more material than absolutely necessary. This approach illustrates his concern for the environment as well as his dedication to materials and their innate qualities. Lovegrove looks to nature to provide the most direct solution to a design problem, often mimicking natural processes in state-of-the-art materials such as milled aluminum, as seen in the prototype “Liquid Bench.” The bench utilizes a material which relates aesthetically to liquid form, the relationship between material and form being at the root of this design. It is a triumph in contemporary design, completely of the moment, while also rooted in organic ideology. Born in Wales, Lovegrove studied at Manchester Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art in London and is one of the most well-known designers working today. He has designed for Cappellini, Moroso, Ty Nant, Tag Heuer, Japan Airlines, Issey Miyake and Yamagiwa Corporation and his designs are held in the permanent collections of the MOMA in New York, the Design Museum in London and the Vitra Museum in Weil Am Rhein.
