Beschreibung:

ROMAN GOLD RING WITH DIANA INTAGLIO 3rd century AD A substantial D-section gold hoop with facetted shoulders, bezel with funicular flange, inset carnelian plaque with intaglio figure of Diana(?) seated with a dog by her side, bowl or lamp in her raised hand. 23 grams, 28mm overall, 15.77 x 18.02mm internal diameter (approximate size British J 1/2, USA 5, Europe 9.32, Japan 9) (1"). Very fine condition. A heavy wearable ring. Provenance Property of a Mayfair gentleman; acquired by the family during the 1970s. Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate. Literature Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L. Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 218 for type. Footnotes Diana is the Roman equivalent of the Greek Artemis and she adopted many of the attributes and mythological tales associated with her eastern counterpart. Diana was originally an ancient goddess of the woods and forests, and in Rome and Latium was considered the protectress of virginity and the moon goddess. Her name is derived from Diviana, meaning "the shining one". As a goddess of the federal cult of the Latins she had a temple on the Aventine Hill in Rome from an early period. Her most important shrine in Italy was at Lake Nemi, close to Rome, which had oracular powers and was patronised by members of the Imperial family.
