Roger de La Fresnaye (French 1885-1925) A sheet of three sketches of figures in landscapes Pencil on wove paper Signed (lower right) 20 x 12cm (7¾ x 4½ in.) The top scene of two nude female figures, one reclining and the other sitting up, is reminiscent of La Fresnaye's 'Naiades'; the middle scene less well defined of a seated figure, seemingly wearing a helmet and wielding a sword, bringing to mind La Fresnaye's dramatic military figures of Cuirassiers, both of these scenes bordered by trees; the bottom scene depicting a man digging a field with a spade, distant mountains and low clouds beyond. In the lower right corner can be seen the rather faded ink signature, R. de la Fresnaye (1885-1925), perhaps best described as a disciple of Cubism, as his subjects remained clearly representational and never fully abstracted. Towards the end of his short life he turned away from the avant-garde to purely conventional realism. Of noble birth, he studied at the Académie Julian, the École des Beaux-Arts, and Academie Ranson where he worked under Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier both of whom were hugely influential on La Fresnaye's work.
