Robert George Dylan Willis. Surrey, Warwickshire & England 1969-1984. 'England v Australia 1981'. The cricket ball with which Bob Willis took eight wickets for forty three runs in the famous third Test played at Headingley on the 16th-21st July 1981. The ball inscribed by Willis in ink 'Headingley 1981. Bob Willis 8-43' and signed by Willis, some fading but all just legible. The ball is accompanied with a special medallion presented by Cornhill Insurance to commemorate his bowling, the medal with relief of ball and stumps and wording 'Cornhill Insurance Test Series. England v Australia 1981' and engraved to verso 'To commemorate Bob Willis's match winning figures of 8-43. England v Australia. Headingley 1981'. Although Ian Botham was adjudged man of the match for his match winning score against the odds of 149no, Willis must have come a very close second hence Cornhill also presented Willis with a commemorative medal. In addition there is a further medal which was Willis's standard Test match medal for the series. The silver metal medal with relief of ball and stumps and wording 'Cornhill Insurance Test Series. England v Australia 1981' and engraved to reverse 'R.G.D. Willis'. Both in original presentation cases. Good/very good condition Previously sold by Christie's Auctioneers in the October 1988 auction held in South Kensington as lot 67
The 1981 Test Series was, remembered for Ian Botham resigning the captaincy after the second Test, England having lost the first and drawn the second, Brearley being reappointed, and for the 'famous' third Test match, at Headingley, Ian Botham and Bob Willis's match. England followed on 227 runs behind and were soon 135-7 in their second innings. Botham and Graham Dilley then put together a stand of 117. Botham finished up with 149no and Dilley 56. Australia needed 130 to win. Australia at 56-2 seemed favourites to win the game, however Willis with 8-43 won the game for England by 18 runs. England won the series 3-1. Willis had match figures of 15.1 overs, three maidens, eight wickets for 43 runs. Seven of his wickets were caught but probably the wicket which stands out to most watchers of the game was when he bowled Ray Bright to win the Test match against all the odds, 500-1 at one point
