Beschreibung:

Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) A Norwegian silver spoon, [1926?], commemorating Amundsen's trans-Arctic flight in the airship 'Norge'. The handle cast with the Northern lights, a triple-portrait of Amundsen, Ellsworth and Nobile, the shields of Norway, America and Italy, a polar bear, the circular bowl with a representation of the Norge passing over the North Pole (marked with three flags), lettered around the interior rim of the bowl 'Luftskibfaerden fra Svalbard 11 Mai via Nordpolen til Teller Alaska 13 Mai 1926.', length: 5.2in. (13cm.). Lincoln Ellsworth, Amundsen's backer and one of his companions on his polar flight of 1925, once again provided the funds ($100,000) to back the trans-Polar expedition and pay for the construction of the airship 'Norge' (designed by Umberto Nobile and built in Italy). The 'Norge' left Kings Bay on 11 May 1926, and, travelling via the Pole, landed at Teller in Alaska two days later. With the successful completion of the flight Amundsen's popularity reached its zenith: he was the first man to reach both Poles as well as the first to complete a trans-Polar flight.
