PARISIIS, [APUD SOCIETATEM MAGNAE NAVIS JACQUES DU PUIS, SEBASTIEN NIVELLE, & MICHEL SOMNIUS], 5 parts in 2 vol. in-f° (text n.c., some lvs slightly browned, handwritten provenance crossed off title-page of vol. I, some light marginal dampstains, stronger at the end of vol. I, joint reinforced at the col. I-143/146, some handwritten notes in vol. I, 13 first lvs of vol. II trimmed, title and table of contents of vol. II doubled and remounted, holes in the col. II-98 without lacks). 19th centubry binding : half sheepskin, brown marbled paper boards, gilt ribbed spines, red edges (corners renewed, dampstains on the boards of vol. I, leather of the spines partly unstuck, stronger in vol. I, joints partly split, renewed in vol. II...).


VERY RARE EDITION given by Felix, cardinal of Monte Alto, containing commentaries with extracts of the Bible, sermons on the Psalms and on the viriginity, letters and funeral orations of Theodosius the Great and Valentinian II. Ambrosius (340-397) was the bishop of Milano, from 374 to 397, and one of the four Church Fathers. This copy belongs to the first works printed by the "Compagnie de La Grand'Navire", a French group of printers which published since 1586 works of the Church Fathers and on canon laws. Illustrated with some head-pieces (one representing the Four Church Fathers in a medallion) and large vignettes on title-pages of the "Compagnie de La Grand'Navire", figuring a large boat, symbol of Paris, with fleur-de-lys on the sails and monograms in the center and on the front. Copy LINED WITH PEN in a neat typography. # Not in Adams, Machiels, Soltész, STC French. Provenance : library of the priest G.N.
