A RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER AS PRESIDENT, TO ENCOURAGE A YOUNG BOY WHO SHARED REAGAN’S HEARING PROBLEM “I’m enclosing a note to Vincent,” Reagan tells John and Mary Ann Kuharski, of Minneapolis. “My note to him is aimed at encouraging him to accept his problem. I hope it will help.” In the accompanying handwritten note, included here, the President tells young Vincent “I’ve sent the name and address of the hearing aid company to your parents. Those of us who have hearing problems sometimes have to have different types of aids depending on what causes our problem. I know how you feel about the aids behind your ears but if that’s the kind you need, wear them & be happy they help you hear.” Reagan’s hearing loss, he explains, emerged in adulthood, when a gunshot went off too close to his ear, causing permanent nerve damage. But he knows how the young boy must feel. “When I was your age I learned I couldn’t see as well as other people and had to have glasses.” He was “very self-conscious and embarrassed” about having to wear them, “but believe me I outgrew that and learned to be happy because with them I could see all the beauty I’d been missing. Now it’s glasses & a hearing aid and I think I’m pretty lucky.” A remarkable, generous gesture on Reagan’s part to comfort a youngster. Only five autograph letters by him as President have appeared at auction ion the last 25 years. Together 5 items.
