Rare English Part-Set of Gothic Horror Slides: "Mistletoe Bough", c. 1890 3 ¼ x 3 ¼ in. (8 x 8 cm), five chromolithograph slides in earlier slip-in mahogany frames with labels of "H.W. Taunt & Co., Lantern Slide, 8 & 10 Broad Street, Oxford, 81 Easton St., Wycombe" Twelve-part hand-colored set of "Puss in Boots" slides (one cracked) in three 4 x 14 in. (10 x 36 cm) mahogany frames with stamped "Newton, 3 Fleet St., London", twelve-part transfer set of "Puss in Boots" slides. – 4 x 15 in. (10 x 38 cm) hand-painted slide "Who Killed Cock Robin?" – The 'bride-and-seek' ballad of the "Mistletoe Bough" was composed c. 1830 by Thomas Haynes Bayly with music by Sir Henry Bishop It tells the story of Lord Lovell and his bride who play a game of hide-and-seek on their wedding day. The wedding guests discover Lady Lovell's handkerchief beside an antique chest, but no sign of the vanished bride. Thirty years later Lord Lovell sees the ghost of his long-lost bride leaving the chest, he prises the lock and discovers her skeleton inside. The story was filmed by Percy Snowe of the Clarendon Film Company in 1904. Rare and early English ghost slides.
