Ralph Brown RA (British, 1928-2013) Wedding II Bronze, Unique 80cm high, 64cm wide, 53cm deep On view at: Dreweatts Donnington Priory Born in Leeds in 1928, Ralph Brown followed in the footsteps of fellow Yorkshire greats Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth and attended the Leeds College of Art. Afterwards, he enrolled in the Royal College of Art, where he was taught by John Skeaping, Leon Underwood and Frank Dobson His first London exhibition was held in 1953, and Henry Moore was among the first to purchase and promote Browns work. Brown achieved nationwide renown with his sculpture Meat Porters commissioned for Harlow New Town in Essex also during the 1950s, and won scholarships which allowed him to travel to Europe. The years Brown spent in Paris during this time were formative for his career, working in the studio of Ossip Zadkine seeing the works of Auguste Rodin and Germaine Richier which had long inspired him, and meeting Alberto Giacometti He also travelled to Cannes, making mosaics for Pablo Picasso and to Italy on the prestigious Boise scholarship, studying Etruscan sculpture. Brown was elected a Royal Academician in 1972, and during the course of his career his sculptures were exhibited alongside fellow mid-century icons such as Armitage and Paolozzi. While the New Generation of sculpture veered towards abstraction during the 60s and 70s, Ralph Browns works would always remain rooted in the figurative tradition, using the human form as a basis for his sensual, often surreal shapes. His work is in the collection of the Tate, Leeds City Art Gallery, and many more.
