QUEEN VICTORIA (1819-1901) Document signed ("Victoria"), one page, oblong 4°, 4th April 1855. Appointing John Cordeiro Warne to be Ensign in the 89th Regiment of Foot (crease marks, some spotting). Early autograph letter signed ("Victoria") to Lady Lansdowne, 1½ pp., 8°, Buckingham Palace, March 13, 1838. Written after Victoria's accession but before her coronation, requesting Lady Landsdowne "to express to Sir Edwin Pearson my best thanks for the beautiful Turkish embroidery he was good enough to send me, & wh. I admire very much" (tape mark to left margin). Early autograph letter signed ("Victoria") (in French), to "Mon Cher Alexander," 2½ pp., 8°, black-edged paper, Windsor Castle, 28 Oct, 1840. A charming letter to a relation thanking him for his congratulations on the recent birth of her first child, later the Empress Frederick of Germany. Trans: "Thank you for your kind letter in which you congratulate me on the birth of our child; only I am cross that you call me Majesty and Madame . You know dear Alexander how I detest that between cousins and I hope that you won't do it in future. I am wonderfully well and so is our little girl ... Albert says a thousand kind things to you" (some tearing along horizontal folds). Autograph letter signed ("Victoria") (in French), to the Duke of Parma, 2½ pp., 8°, Osborne, 6th Sep, 1848. Inviting him and the Duchess to Windsor (some staining). Autograph letter signed ("Victoria") to the Hon. Harriet Lister, 2 pp., integral blank leaf, 8°, Windsor Castle, Nov 3 1848. Offering her condolences on the death of her sister (tearing and repairs along folds). Autograph note from Victoria to Lord Clarendon, 1½ pp., 8°, Buckingham Palace black-edged paper, 2 March 1857. Requesting him to telegraph to Lord Cowley her satisfaction at the good news received. She considers his conduct has been admirable throughout, adding "The news from China is very anxious". [In 1857 Cowley was sole British plenipotentiary for the conclusion of the peace with Persia, which was signed in Paris on 4th March of that year] Autograph letter signed ("V R I") to Elizabeth, Duchess of Argyll, 3 pp., 8°, Buckingham Palace black-edged paper, 5 March 1869. Thanking her for a letter and book and expressing the hope of drinking tea with her the next week. With an engraving of Queen Victoria. VICTORIA MARY LOUISA, DUCHESS OF KENT (1786-1861) [Mother of V R] Autograph letter signed ("Victoria") to Lady Francis, 3 pp. 8°, Kensington Palace, 8 June 1831. Declining an invitation, "I feel the sacrifice I bring to being consistent to the rule I have followed for many years: I should have liked of all things to have witnessed Lord Francis' Play ... and more than that I should have liked ... to have evinced my regard for you ... But this double gratification I must give up". (8)
