Quarter Plate Ambrotype of Militia Company on Parade,

Schätzpreis

Beschreibung:

a fine outdoor view of an antebellum or early war likely New England militia company under arms in a shady town square. The unknown infantry company wearing gray frock coats and white cartridge box belts numbers at least 51 privates and NCOs (based on a count of the bayonets) in three compact rows with two of the officers uniformed in dark blue carrying swords. Three military drummers are posted to the left of the company while at the far right there appears to be another infantry company with bayonets fixed. Sundry civilians and enthusiastic boys are scattered throughout the background. It is unfortunate that we have no history or provenance whatsoever on this fine, unpublished image. Still, the plate is palpable in conveying the festival-like activity that must have accompanied a typical militia muster in 1860. Condition: The clear plate is flawless, EXC with good clarity for the extreme depth of field and positively glows under artificial light. The plate is backed by a piece of dark velvet and housed in a separated composition case.
