Left hand drive. In the late 1950s Mercedes-Benz found itself with a fine lineup of modern, powerful engines but a somewhat dated range of bodystyles. This shortcoming was answered by the introduction of the new 220 Series at the 1959 Frankfurt Show. The second generation 220 had completely new and elegant bodywork, longer wider and lower than before. Flanking the traditional Mercedes grill were distinctive vertically stacked headlights, contoured into wings that swept back to an angular tail. Combined with this attractive styling, the 220 SE convertible offered the first production four seater to have the benefits of a fuel injected engine, producing 130bhp, along with revised suspension and disc brakes. The body design was so advanced and stylish that it remained largely unchanged until 1972. Following the 220 SE model, in 1965 Mercedes-Benz offered the public a larger range of engine specifications and launched the 250SE and 280SE models. With the 280SE model the horsepower was raised to 160bhp. On both models four wheel disc brakes were introduced along with larger diameter tires and improvements in the suspension. Mrs. Lynn Factor purchased this car on March 30, 1968 from Mercedes-Benz Checker California Sales Corporation in Alhambra, California for $10,958. This one owner from new car has covered just over 40,0000 documented miles. The original sales receipt from 1968 confirms this car was supplied with column shift gear change, power steering for $200, electric windows for $137, front center arm rest for $71 and tinted glass for $55. The car has factory installed air-conditioning, a radio, a spare wheel, a tool roll and a jack, and some original service tags can still be found in the engine bay. Since its original purchase in 1968 there is documentation of the complete service history of the car with the bills totalling over $15,000. Always garaged, this beautiful car has been maintained extremely well. Mrs. Factor has used the car sparingly, but does recall giving art world celebrity friends such as Andy Warhol Irving Blum and Roy Lichtenstein rides in the car.
