Property from a British Private Collection
Jan Josefsz. van GoyenLeiden 1596 - 1656 The Hague A landscape with peasants resting by a watermill
signed lower right: I. V. GOIEN / 1623oil on oak panel, a collector's red wax seal on the reverse with initials: FHLunframed: 39.2 x 53.8 cm.; 15½ x 21¼ in.framed: 56.6 x 71.2 cm.; 22¼ x 28 in.Condition reportThe panel is cradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is slightly dirty, with a very slightly discoloured varnish. There is visible retouching along two horizontal splits, which run the width of the panel, just above centre, as well as retouching to a spot in the sky, centre left, probably resulting from a knot in the wood. Additional, very fine lines of retouching and a few surface scratches are visible in the sky. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all this and reveals an opaque and streaky varnish, making it quite difficult to discern intervention in the main composition, although some small spots are visible, such as in the group of figures and horse and carriage, lower right. In overall fair condition.

It is a landscape of the artist's own imagination, and demonstrates in particular his mastery of the narrative element in landscape painting, a field that he would dominate in the Netherlands for decades to come.
