Woodcut of a pelican in her piety (Hodnett 1489) on A1 r , 12 woodcuts illustrating the celebration of festivals on A1 v , D2 r , E6 r , I3 v , I7 r , K6 v , L4 v , M2 r , M8 v , O8 v , N1 r and R8 r , woodcut printer's device (McKerrow 9b) in red within black border on verso of last leaf, woodcut decorated initials and lombard initials, musical notation on red staves, black letter, 30 lines partly printed in red, title and imprint on penultimate leaf. Printed in red and black. (Small wormholes in first 16 and last 17 leaves, tear in U1 repaired without loss, tear in last two leaves with minor loss supplied in facsimile, a few other marginal tears repaired, some leaves slightly soiled.) 19th-century brown morocco blocked in blind, spine in compartments (scuffed, covers detached), g.e. Provenance : early two-line manuscript invocation to the Mother of God erased below imprint. FIRST EDITION of the Processional for Sarum use, and EXTREMELY RARE, with STC locating this copy only. In addition, the charming, fresh series of 12 woodcuts depicting arrangements for the celebration of festivals, which was clearly cut for this edition, is known to Hodnett only through Pynson's 1502 edition. Hodnett mentions the existence of the cuts, but does not list or reproduce them. The first woodcut of the pelican in her piety refers to the editor of the Processional, Richard Foxe, Bishop of Winchester, who incorporated the pelican into his device while Bishop of Durham; it may be found already in 1499 adorning his building works at Durham Castle.
