The Works, Carefully Revised and Corrected by the Former Editions..., [Edited by Sir Thomas Hanmer], 6 volumes, 1st Oxford edition, 1743-44, engraved vignette general title (dated 1744), engraved portrait frontispiece and 38 engraved plates, some slight offsetting, occasional spotting or browning, armorial bookplate of Leigh [Chandos, First Baron Leigh, 1791-1850] to front pastedowns, contemporary speckled calf, gilt-decorated spines with spine labels, volume number labels to volumes 1 and 5 applied to the wrong volumes and lacking volume number label to volume 5, most joints cracked and weak, a little wear to spine ends and volume 2 spine label chipped, volume 6 rebacked with spine relaid, 4to The general title-page in volume 1 is dated 1743. The volume title-pages of volumes 2-4 are dated 1743, those of volumes 1, 5 & 6 dated 1744. This set was presumably sold in 1927 at the same time as Leigh's set of Shakespeare First Folios, which had been passed to his son, William Henry Leigh, and then sold by Sotheby's. Alston, III. 75.
