PRE-SCYTHIAN SHORT DAGGER 8th century BC A 'Cimmerian' iron dagger with short leaf-shaped blade and median rib, flared crossguard, flat-section grip with flange to the upper edge. 129 grams, 22cm (8 1/2"). Condition Fine condition, cleaned and conserved. Provenance Property of a North London gentleman; acquired on the UK market before 1992. Footnotes The Cimmerians are first mentioned in the 8th century BC in Assyrian records. They attacked Urartu in Anatolia in 714 BC while this region was part of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. They were defeated by an Assyrian army led by Sargon II in 705 BC. The Cimmerians went on the conquer Phrygia in 696/5 BC and Dardis, capital of Lydia, in 652 BC. Around 619 BC Alyattes of Lydia defeated them and there are no further records of them in historical sources. There is a custom in archaeological writing of using the name 'Cimmerian' for the archaeological record of the earliest transmission of Iron Age culture along the Danube to Central and Western Europe, although the link is specious.
