Beschreibung:

POTTER, Beatrix (1866-1943). The Tailor of Gloucester, [no imprint] [colophon: London, Strangeways and Sons, printers], December 1902. 16°, coloured frontispiece and 15 plates by Beatrix Potter (a few faint spots to text leaves), original pink pictorial paper-covered boards (spine lightly browned and frayed at head, short tear to upper joints, corners a little rubbed, a few light stains). THE PRIVATELY-PUBLISHED FIRST EDITION. Limited to 500 copies. Beatrix Potter finished this story in December 1901, presenting it to Freda Moore as a Christmas present. Written out neatly in an exercise book, she wove many of her favourite rhymes and verses into the tale, illustrating it with twelve watercolours. Given the success of Peter Rabbit and thinking it unlikely that Warne would publish another of her books so soon, she decided to have the book printed privately. Working through the original manuscript, she also redrew ten of the twelve illustrations, omitted two and added a further six to total sixteen. The edition was ready by mid-December 1902, the author sending a copy to Warne shortly afterwards. Describing the edition to a friend she commented: "I find that children of the right age -- 12 -- like it best.... It has been a great amusement to me to draw it at all events." Linder p. 116 and pp. 420-423; Quinby 3.
