POST MEDIEVAL MARY THEOTOKOS APPLIQUé 19th century AD A Russian bronze plaque with nimbate bust of Mary (as Our Lady of Kazan) and standing nimbate infant Jesus extending his right hand; concentric pelletted borders, 'MP' to one upper corner and 'IHC' to the other. 21 grams, 48mm (2"). Fine condition. Provenance From the collection of a medical professional; acquired 1970s. Footnotes Possibly the most revered and well known image of the Virgin in the Russian Orthodox church, the original icon was found in 1579 in a garden of the city of Kazan. The icon was transferred to a special church that was built for it where it became the protector of the city and of all Russia. The icon was moved in 1821 to the new Kazan Church in St Petersburg but in 1918 troops of the Soviet Government seized the icon to be transported to Moscow where it disappeared enroute. It was eventually discovered in New York at the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad and was returned to Russia.
