Beschreibung:

oil on academy board. A charming portrait of a young boy wearing a gray and blue dress and holding a small whip. An inked note on the back board identifies the boy as Albert Winslow Trow of Arlington, the father of Mrs. Archa Coit of West Newbury. In a period, black-painted frame; 13.25" x 9.5" (w/o frame), 15" x 11.5" (w/frame). Research has located Albert Winslow Trow as having been born in New Hampshire in 1844, dating the portrait to ca 1850. When enumerated for the 1880 Federal Census, Trow was living with his wife Josephine (b. 1846, also of New Hampshire) and a young woman named Addie Chamberlin, who was identified as a seamstress. At that time, Trow was working as a railroad ticket agent. George G. Hartwell (1815-1901) is considered one of the Prior-Hamblin School of painters. See The Folk Art Collection of Jon and Rebecca Zoler (Sotheby's, New York, January 22, 2005, lot 659) for a portrait of a young girl in a nearly identical pose. Condition: Frame loose, minor inpainting.
