PORTLOCK, Nathaniel (c.1748-1817). A Voyage Round the World: but More Particularly to the North-West Coast of America; Performed in 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788, in the King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon. London: John Stockdale, 1789. The first edition in the most desirable state, with the five handcolored ornithological plates. Portlock and Dixon’s voyage was the first commercial journey to the Pacific Northwest, chartered by the South Sea Company for the purpose of fur trading. After a long stopover in Hawaii, the expedition surveyed the Western coast of America and then sailed for China. The two captains had served together on Cook’s third voyage, and Portlock here includes many vivid details about that journey as well.
