Ponsonby, Henry Frederick CRIMEAN WAR SKETCHBOOKS AND SCRAPBOOKS AS LT-COLONEL IN THE GRENADIER GUARDS, FOUR VOLUMES: i) "Scrap Book 1844-1860", with 3 photographs by James Robertson (lightly albumenised salted paper prints each signed on the negative, two captioned in pencil on the reverse, "Sebastapol before the last Bomber Deck" and "Karabelnaia from theSevastapol side of the Admiralty Harbour", the prints faded), other Crimean material including a "Memorandum of the order of Marching Parties to the Trenches Right Attack - 9th July 1855" with an accompanying sketch map, and Russian printed military ephemera "picked up at Sevastapol" including a notice on the prevention of cholera, together with miscellaneous other cuttings, printed ephemera, cut signatures, and sketches, c.160 pages, folio, half calf marbled boards, scuffed ii) "Scribbling Book", with 5 sketch maps including of the camp before Sevastapol and the lines at Kamiesch, notes on the Crimean campaigns and lists of troops, notes on the region, the Cyrillic alphabet and word lists, notes on military strategy and terminology, and miscellaneous other notes, 64 pages, plus blanks, folio, dated Camp Sevastapol, 1855, marbled wrappers, worn iii) sketch book, with 28 pencil sketches and notes, the sketches depicting the Crimea and return to Britain, including of Inkerman, Sevastapol, camp mess house and kitchen, several sketches of Istanbul, and a sketch of the Guards' entry into London on their return from the Crimea, Sevastapol-London, c.80 pages, plus blanks, oblong 8vo metallic paper memorandum book, 1 June to 31 October 1856, purple morocco with brass clasp, worn iv) Roll of Officers of the First or Grenadier Guards, listing officers from 1657 to 1869, with a history of the regiment, lists of officers in various campaigns and a list of casualties in the Crimea (where 150 were killed in battle but 759 died of disease), 8 ink and wash illustrations of the regimental colours and four ink and wash portraits of historic officers, and 24 pen and ink portraits of officers including several who served in the Crimea, over 200 pages, 8vo, c.1870, red calf backed red boards
