Der beschlossen Gart des rosenkrantz Marie. Nuremberg: [printer for the Sodalitas Celtica, ?F. Peypus?], 1505. 2 volumes. [1 title], [2 register], ccvi, ccviii-cccii; ccxcvii, [2 register] leaves. Illustrated with well over a thousand woodcuts from the circle of artists around Dürer, including Hans Baldung Grien and Hans Schaufelein (including duplicates). The woodcuts in volume two with period or early hand-coloring. Folio (300 x 200 mm). Later blindstamped pigskin in antique style, edges stained blue. Eight leaves are facsimiles (leaves 11, 101 and the full-page woodcut following leaf 64 in volume 1 and the title leaf and leaves 5, 120, 121 and 229 [upper half] in volume 2), tiny wormholes to approximately 30 leaves at volume ends, intermittent dampstain, few marginal paper repairs, volume 1 with title-page remargined with some loss, long closed tear to leaf 30; volume 2 with long closed tear and partial repair to leaf 60, closed tear to leaf 97 and small hole affecting woodcut on leaf 176; various early ownership inscriptions (faded or shaved), minor scuffs to binding. First edition. Extremely rare Marian work with important woodcuts, the second volume hand-colored. It is the first book with woodcuts by Hans Schaufelein. "This work contains an immense number of cuts by Nuremberg artists. Some can be attributed, with various degrees of certainty, to Dürer, Hans von Kulmbach Baldung, and Schaufelein" (Dodgson I, p. 510). Volume One includes the two-leaf register recorded by Panzer, but not present in either the BL or Fairfax Murray copies.
