PICART, Bernard - [LA BARRE DE BEAUMARCHAIS, Antoine]. Le Temple des Muses, orné sont représentés les evenemens les plus remarquables de l'antiquité fabuleuse. Amsterdam: Zacherie Chatelain, 1733. 2° (455 x 300mm.). Title printed in red and black, half-title. Engraved additional title, title vignette and 60 plates engraved under the direction of Picart (each printed within a different engraved decorative border by Picart) (small tear in margin of A1, occasional light browning or spotting). Contemporary red morocco gilt, covers with triple filet border, spine in eight compartments, green morocco lettering piece on one, the others decorated with pomegranates and small tools, g.e. (corners and head and foot of spine neatly repaired). Provenance : d'Hémery (armorial bookplate); Peter Brooke (ownership inscription, dated 1839). The fine plates take their inspiration from Diepenbecke's illustrations to Michel de de Marolles' Temple des Muses published in Paris in 1655. It is possible that the binding was executed for d'Hémery as the pomegranate (featured on the spine) appears on his shield. Cohen/de Ricci 531.
