[ Bound with :] -- Copies and Extracts of Letters from Governor Phillip, giving an account of the nature and fertility of the land in and adjoining to any settlement in New South Wales . [London: Printed for J. Debrett, 1791-1792]. 2 works in one, 4° (285 x 210mm). 26 pp. and 127 pp. (Occasional faint spotting, heavier to first title, title to second work cut away with loss and replaced by blank page.) Later marbled-paper wrappers (extremities lightly rubbed, with a few insignificant nicks). Provenance : George Duncan (engraved armorial bookplate on title verso). RARE FIRST FLEET PAMPHLETS ON THE MODERN FOUNDATION OF AUSTRALIA . Governor Phillip took the First Fleet to Australia in 1788 and founded the new settlement at Sydney Cove. Because of the drought of 1790-1791, which created intolerable pressure on food supplies and brought the indigenous peoples into conflict with the colonists, Phillip sent hundreds of convicts to lush Norfolk Island in 1790. Phillip himself was forced by ill-health to return to London in 1792. The first work was compiled in Phillip's absence from his reports, while the second, longer work was published on Phillip's return. Both comprise invaluable detail of the fledgling colony, and are the first open publications of letters between Governor Phillip and his supporter Lord Sydney. Used to generate support and develop the Australian outpost, these pamphlets were evidently published in very small numbers: ONLY 6 COPIES CAN BE TRACED AT AUCTION SINCE 1975 (ABPC/AE-online). First work: Ferguson 116; Wantrup 9. Second work: Ferguson 144; Wantrup 12.
