Vienna: Johann Winterburg for Leonardus and Lucas Alantes, 1514. Two parts in one volume, 2 o (302 x 202 mm). Collation: aa-bb 8 a-c 8 d-e 6 f 8 g 4 AA 8 BB 6 CC 8 A-D 8 . 6 E 8 F 4 G 6 . 132 leaves, foliated. Gothic type. 2 astronomical woodcuts on title, coat-of-arms of Maximilian at end, woodcut initials, some historiated, several woodcut diagrams in text. (Some minor margial worming.) Later half vellum (vellum torn along lower joint). Provenance : "Clericor Regul. Domus St. Vinc t i s Plac. e Ad sum D. Laur. Guarinon," early inscription on title. FIRST EDITION of two practical works of astronomy by Peurbach and Regiomontanus, two of the foremost astronomers of the fifteenth century. The Tabulae exlipsium is Peurbach's most impressive works and was still used by Tycho near the end of the sixteenth century. Peurbach expanded and rearranged the Alphonsine Tables for every step in eclipse computation, saving much time for the calculator. The tables in the first edition were computed for the meridian of Vienna. Peurbach's student Regiomontanus completed his Tabula primi mobilis in Hungary prior to 1471 when he left for Nuremberg. He had originally intended to publish it at his own press which he set up in his house in Nuremberg, but this was never carried out. It was published here for the first time along with his teacher's table of eclipses. Edited by Georg Tannstetter (who used the pseudonym Collimitius), the introduction contains a bio-bibliographical catalogue of distinguished mathematicians and astronomers associated with the University of Vienna. Adams P-2271; Stillwell Science 84; Zinner 1013; Norman 1689.
