Pepys had been named a clerk in the British navy in 1660. The document concerns a naval vessel about to sail, and directs an official at Chatham to "so soon as you shall have notice from ye Masters Attendant that his Ma[s]t[er]s shipp ye Maryrose is in such a readiness for ye sea as to require ye entering of men upon her for her dispatch, to enter such seamen upon her as shall be sent you by ourselves... as fast as occasion requires you... untill her number be compleated to One hundred & fourty, which is the complement allowed her for this expedition..."
