Philadelphia: Francis Bailey, 1784. 64 pp., 8vo (203 x 120 mm). Later half burgundy straight-grain morocco over marbled paper boards. Condition : minor browning principally to the first and last leaves; rubbed along joints. a reissue of the constitution of 1776 with a critical report calling for amendments. Just following the end of the Revolution, a bitter political fight began between the Constitutionalists, who had principally drafted the Constitution of 1776, and the Republicans, a coalition of the old Quaker upper class with those of newer wealth who sought to reform the government. Concurrently, the Federalists led by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison began their own critique of the Articles of Confederation, leading to Constitutional Convention of 1787.
