Additional engraved title in vol. 1, full-page engraved portrait of the author by R NANTEUIL and N. REGNESSON after FRANçOIS CHAUVEAU in both volumes, frontispiece in each volume, 6 double-page plates (one folding), 3 text engravings, and woodcut initials and ornaments in text (some staining, folding plate with repaired tear). FIRST EDITION of Vulson's encyclopedic work on chivalry, tournaments and combat. In addition to general histories, Vulson also provides descriptions of specific tournaments and combats, including tournaments organized for the wedding festivities of LOUIS XIII (1601-1643), King of France, and ANNE of Austria (1601-1666) in 1612 and for the entry of HENRY II (1519-1559), King of France, and CATHERINE DE'MEDICI (1519-1589) into Paris, as well as duels between JEAN DE MASSé and JEAN DE ASTELEY and between Asteley and PHILIPPE BOYLE. The plates illustrate scenes of tournaments and competitions, a fight between a dog and a man with witnesses cheering on the spectacle, and the elaborate festivities celebrating the King's wedding at La Place Royale in Paris on 5-7 April 1612.
