Second edition, the first to contain the explanatory text. Of the 182 devices only 104 were taken from the first edition of 1551, 70 appearing in this edition for the first time. This was the first book to collect devices of historical figures. Among those of French and foreign royalty are the crowned salamander of François I, the three crescents of Henri II, the crowned porcupine of Louis XII, and the portcullis of Henry VIII.
