PARADIN, Claude (ca. 1510-1573). Devises heroïques . Lyon: Jan de Tournes et Guil. Gazeau, 1557. 8° (161 x 116mm). Title within historiated woodcut border, 182 woodcut devices attributed to Bernard Salomon each with Latin caption, one large ornamental initial. (Occasional small marginal stain.) Citron crushed morocco by Thibaron, gilt supralibros, spine lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins, edges marbled and gilt. Provenance: acquired from Petrier, 1931.

Citron crushed morocco by Thibaron, gilt supralibros, spine lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins, edges marbled and gilt. Provenance: acquired from Petrier, 1931. Second edition, the first to contain the explanatory text. Of the 182 devices only 104 were taken from the first edition of 1551, 70 appearing in this edition for the first time. This was the first book to collect devices of historical figures. Among those of French and foreign royalty are the crowned salamander of François I, the three crescents of Henri II, the crowned porcupine of Louis XII, and the portcullis of Henry VIII.
