Lithographic and chromolithographic plates in two numbered series by and after Pajol, the first series numbered 1-29 on 23 leaves, comprising title, dedication to Tsar Nicholas I, and plates showing flags, medals, divisions, and details of arms and colours, the second a series of 56 chromolithographic plates of military costume, finished by hand and heightened with tempera. (On guards, some light spotting, mainly at margins, one plate detached.) Contemporary black morocco-backed cloth, upper cover with title blocked in gilt, spine with raised bands and gilt ruling, shoplabel of the Papeterie Berthé-Royer, 3, Rue du Bae. Provenance : presentation copy from the author to [?] Arnold Reilie, 'son ami d'enfance' (inscription on title, slightly affected by small stain). PRESENTATION COPY OF PAJOL'S FINE-RENDERINGS OF RUSSIAN MILITARY COSTUME, the first five plates in the series constituting portraits of Tsar Nicholas and his four sons (the plates of Nicholas I and crown prince Alexandre Nicolajewisch are signed in facsimile on the mount). A wide variety of topographical scenes, pleasing variations in the posture of the figures, and fine hand-colouring, are all combined to good effect in the plates which are given a certain irony because Pajol commanded the French cavalry in the Crimea, while his father, comte Claude-Pierre Pajol (1772-1844), was a Napoleonic general who led the French advance guard into Moscow. Although Colas follows Vinet in stating that the 29 numbered plates, which include the title and dedication, are on 22 leaves, the fact that there is a plate 21bis brings the actual total to 23 leaves.
