Beschreibung:

Pair of Minton Majolica Figural Jardinieres Each of bulbous form, with a swirled gadrooned body and two handles in the form of youthful satyrs, decorated with lion masks and garland swags on a turquoise ground, one stamped MINTON and 1018 and also with a year cipher for 1873. Height 10 1/2 inches. Provenance: Phillips, New York Victorian Furniture, Decorative Arts and Paintings and English, American and Continental Majolica, July 14, 1987, Estate of Anthony P. Russo
the jardiniere with the MINTON stamp mark appears to be in good condition (there is one very minor flake loss near the upper rim on part of the green wreath decoration) the other jardiniere has had extensive restoration, including the area where the foot meets the underside of the bowl; the restoration to the foot includes overpaint on the exterior top and underside, which has now discolored to a darker blue color and is evident all the way around the foot; the restoration is evident without the aid of blacklighting; the exterior turquoise blue ground and also the interior puce ground appear to be fully overpainted; there are probably other minor areas of touch-up restoration to other areas such as the raised molded decoration
