Her mother was Françoise Gilot who Picasso met in 1943 when she was 21 and he was 61. They had two children together, Claude in 1947 and Paloma in 1949. She left Picasso in 1953. This sensitive portrait was drawn when Picasso returned for Christmas to Vallurais in 1952 and is a delightful and very personal example of his lithography from this period, perhaps his best period in this medium.
