Eins von 44 Exemplaren. – Im Druckvermerk von Picasso signiert und vom Verleger P. A. Bénoit nummeriert und signiert. – Auf unbeschnittenen Bogen »Velin d’Arches«, jeweils mittig gefalzt. – Die Radierungen wurden mit der Kaltnadel in Zelluloidfolien geritzt, ein Verfahren, das Bénoit auf Anraten von Douglas Cooper Picasso nahelegte. Den Druck führte Bénoit selbst aus. Den Text, in Griechisch und französischer Nachdichtung von Jean Beaufret, setzte und druckte die Imprimerie Union, Paris. »Pindar’s ›Eighth Pythian Ode‹ was, after Ovid’s ›Metamorphoses‹ (illustrated by Picasso 1931) and Aristophanes’s ›Lysistrata‹ (1934), the third and last text from classical antiquity which Picasso illustrated. […] The ›Eighth Pythian Ode‹ was presented (i. e. sung) in 446 B.C. at Aegina, in honor of a certain Aristomenes who had won the wrestling competition at the Pythian Games at Delphi. Pindar celebrates the youth’s splendid victory,but also mourns the transience of happiness and glory by evoking the sad fate of the defeated. […] Picasso’s engravings illustrate three aspects of the athletic contest: a young athlete about to begin the match; the triumphant athlete radiating beauty and strength, and, finally, the vanquished athlete of Pindar’s ›Ode‹, a short, stocky man with foldfet arms and dark face. Das Inselbändchen enthält neben den beiden Textfassungen auch eine deutsche Nachdichtung von Johannes Malms und Herma Goeppert-Frank.
