An old label on verso of frame is inscribed "Georgiana. Eld(est ) dau(ghter) of John 1st Earl Spencer. Mar: 1774 to William 5th Duke of Devonshire and died 1806." Provenance : Christie's London, 16 November 1982, lot 78; With Paul & Dominic Colnaghi, London; Christie’s, 29 June 1810, lot 32, to Lord Berben (?). Literature : G. C. Williamson, Ozias Humphry R.A., 1918, p. 221. The source of the Portrait of Georgiana is Thomas Gainsborough’s 1783 full-length portrait of the Duchess of Devonshire, now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Humphry possibly viewed the painting while it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1783 (no. 78). Williamson notes a miniature of the Duchess by Humphry dated 1783 in the Collection of the Earl Spencer. The second drawing depicts Lady Elizabeth Foster, daughter of Frederick Hervey 4th Earl of Bristol. A close friend of Georgiana, she became the mistress of the 5th Duke, and following Georgiana’s death she and the Duke married.
