Provenance : ink manuscript index of the Supplemental maps written in a 17th-century hand bound in at beginning. THE 'FIRST ATLAS' WITH ORTELIUS’ FIRST SUPPLEMENT. This second Latin edition of 1571 contains the first edition of the Additamentum Theatri Orbis Terrarum . As Van der Krogt states, ‘Ortelius was very customer-orientated with his additions. He waited until a reasonable number of new maps was ready for publication and added them all at once to a new edition’ (IIIA, p.36). The map of Bavaria is not called for on the Additamentum title-page, and is not included in the present lot.
