Original watercolor painting by Gypsy Lou Webb Author: Louise, Webb Date Published: c.1960 Description: Watercolor on paper. Painting: 21.5x15 cm (8½x6"), in mat and frame: 42.5x37.5 cm (16¾x14¾"). Watercolor painting of the French Quarter or similar scene by Louise "Gypsy Lou" Webb, signed by the artist at the lower right corner. Likely one of the many paintings the artist and famous independent publisher created to sell to tourists in the French Quarter in order to finance The Outsider, among other endeavors. Louise Webb and her husband Jon together formed Loujon Press, an avant-garde publisher operating during the 1960s in New Orleans. A pioneer of high-quality, independent publishing, Loujon Press was instrumental in launching and supporting the careers of literary icons Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Langston Hughes, Diane di Prima, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, LeRoi Jones and William S. Burroughs, among many others. Combining art, prose, and poetry and using a labor-intensive, old-fashioned letter press, Louise and Jon published the now-famous literary journal The Outsider as well as books by Charles Bukowski and Henry Miller.
