Original VAUGHN BODE Drawing from "Das Kampf" * "Happiness Is Making A Parachute Jump Behind Enemy Lines And Forgetting Your Gun," 1963 Author: [Original Comic Art] Bodé, Vaughn Date Published: 1963 Description: Original Vaughn Bodé illustration from "Das Kampf," the artist's first book. Pencil and ink on index card, measuring 4x6", signed "Von," his early pen name. Excellent condition. "Happiness is Making a Parachute Jump Behind Enemy Lines and Forgetting Your Gun" was drawn by a 21-year-old Vaughn Bodé in May, 1963, two years after getting kicked out of the Army on a psychiatric discharge, a consequence of going AWOL. Bodé, who signed his work "Von" at the time, was inspired to create the anti-war parody Das Kampf. According to Steven Fox of ComixJoint.com, Das Kampf was "a war-themed spoof on Charles Schulz's 1962 book Happiness is a Warm Puppy." Only 100 copies of Bodé's mimeographed Das Kampf mag were made and distributed in 1963 (it was reissued in 1977 in book format). It's an incredibly rare proto-Underground key; copies rarely surface for sale, and when they do, they fetch up to $4000, according to Fogel's Underground Price and Grading Guide. Needless to say, original art from this book is likewise scarce. We were unable to locate auction records for any original pages from Das Kampf. Enjoying the Sale? Order a fully-illustrated softcover catalogue for 30 bucks. Only about 100 copies were printed and they're going fast. To reserve a copy, contact PBA's Director of Comics: ivan@pbagalleries.com. Consign to PBA Galleries. Our comic sales average a 98% sell-through rate, our prices realized are top-of-the-market, and our research-intensive catalogues are the best in the business.
