By the early 1960s, the Silver Cloud series was becoming dated, even for a tradition-bound manufacturer like Rolls-Royce. Although the power train had been updated with an overhead valve V8 in 1959, the styling retained cues of the Silver Dawn and sibling Bentley Mk VI, a design dating from 1946. The debut of the Silver Shadow in 1965 erased any doubt that Rolls was committed to dramatic change. The overall effect was stunning. Vestiges of separate fenders were gone, and the cars sat lower. This concession to New World design, however, gave up nothing in elegance. A formal roof line was retained, as well as the hallmark radiator grille topped with the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot. Beneath the modern yet elegant façade lay thoroughly up-to-date technology: unitary construction, independent rear suspension, automatic chassis leveling and four-wheel disc brakes. The engine was increased in displacement from 6,230 to 6,750cc in 1969 to overcome power losses attributed to emission controls; the same year a long-wheelbase version was introduced. In 1977, the Silver Shadow was given a number of improvements, among them a modified front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. The cars were redesignated Silver Shadow II and the long-wheelbase model was given the name Silver Wraith II. The Silver Shadow/Silver Wraith models were spectacularly successful, with more than 31,000 built in 16 years. Delivered new by Carriage House Motor Cars of Greenwich, this Silver Wraith II long-wheelbase saloon is a one owner, low mileage car. One of 2,145 built between 1977 and 1980, it has the Everflex black textured fabric roof that was standard on the model; the body is painted Silver Sand over Black. The interior, in beige leather with contrasting dark piping, is immaculate. Engine is the upgraded 6,750cc aluminum V8, driving through a sturdy Hydra-Matic Turbo 400 3-speed transmission. The engine compartment is clean but not detailed; interior of the trunk appears as new. Carefully maintained, the car has been driven fewer than 23,000 miles and comes with all service records. A new owner will find it pleasing in every respect.
