Tri tolstyaka [Three Fat Man].
Moscow: Izdate'stvo Gazety Pravda, 1935. Pp.2-212, 8vo (217 x 144 mm). Wood engravings by V. I. Kozlinskii. Original boards, the upper cover and backstrip printed in dark brown and light grey, illustrated endpapers printed in black. Condition : old creasing to pp. 153-160; neat repairs to joints and head of backstrip. This expressionistic proletarian fairy tale for children describes the class struggle within a circus. It was first published in 1928 after Olesha's wildly popular satirical novel Zavist [Envy] (1927). The author soon ran afoul of the Soviet authorities; and Zavist was denounced for its "reactionary" stylistic tendencies and Olesha for "antihumanism." He was not rehabilitated until 1956. Today he is considered one of the greatest Russian writers of the twentieth century As a veteran poster designer of the agitational ROSTA or the Russian Telegraph Agency, Kozlinskii was perfect for Olesha satirical fantasy Tri tolstyaka .
