Oil on canvas 125 x 100cm. (49 1/4 x 39 3/8in.) Provenance: A.A.H. Wykeham of Tythrop House, Private Collection Sale: Sotheby’s, 21-22 August 1933, ‘The valuable contents of Tythrop House, Thame, Oxfordshire, The property of A.A.H. Wykeham, Esq., D.L., J.P.’, ex-lot 445 Purchased from the above sale by ‘Fowler’ Mallett, London Acquired from the above by the present owner in 1972 Traditionally catalogued as by Sir Godfrey Kneller the present lot belonged to Aubrey Augustus Henley Wykham (1873-1947) and hung in the dining room of Tythrop House along with a portrait of Lady Carnarvon, seated in a purple robe and black mantle by Sir Peter Lely The portrait was sold by Sotheby’s in 1933 as part of ‘The Valuable Contents of Tythrop House.’ It is annotated in the auctioneer's copy of the sale that the portrait of Richard, Fifth Viscount Wenman (1685-1729) was purchased for £140 by 'Fowler'. Fowler purchased a number of other works of art at this sale including another portrait of Richard, Fifth Viscount Wenman by Sir Godfrey Kneller hung in the staircase hall showing the young boy holding his bow in his left hand. This was purchased for £55. A summary of the house sale was published in The Times on 23rd August 1933 highlighting the highest prices of the sale. A portrait by Sir Peter Lely of Anne Hyde and her Music Master sold for £1,050 to the fine art dealers Legatt. A portrait of Philip, Fourth Earl of Pembroke by Anthony Van Dyck realised £1,720. The total sale over the two days £9,237 and 7 shilling according to the annotations in the auctioneer's salebook. Condition report disclaimer
